Do you remember, Masaki? The first day we’ve met.
I was going to visit my old granny in the hospital because doctors said she was going to die soon. I mistook the room and went in yours but you didn't even notice. You were looking out of the window and one of the saddest looks I ever saw was painted on your beautiful face. I was so fascinated that I didn't speak a word until you turned around and stared at me with a puzzled expression.
"Ah, I'm sorry. I think it's the wrong room." I immediately said turning around and going out. At that time I didn't know that you would become my obsession.
When I met my granny she seemed very energetic so I felt relieved and after a week I almost forgot her real condition. We chatted everyday like nothing was going to happen, like we did when I was still young and lived near her house. One day she talked about you. She was smiling like a teenager who just fell in love.
"He's such a good boy, you know. He always comes to meet me when I feel alone and brings me candies." She said flushing a bit. "He would be a perfect match for you." She added.
"Do you really think so?" I was confused because I couldn't believe that the cheerful boy my granny described was the same sad boy I met a week before. "Do you know what happened to him?" I asked her out of curiosity. She said she didn't have the guts to ask you because she felt it was something you didn't want to talk about.
After two days I met you again. I accompanied my granny in the garden to take a walk. You were sitting on a bench, looking at the sky with the same gaze I saw the first time. With the slight sun reflected on your pale skin, you looked like an angel to me who was falling deeper and deeper in love with you. But even at that time, I didn't realize it yet.
"Masaki, ohayo!" My granny greeted. You turned around and when you saw her, a bright and contagious smile appeared on your lips and your eyes were full of gentleness. My heart skipped a beat.
"Ohayo Obaa-chan!" You said with a high pitched and husky voice. That same voice that repeats in my mind now and that I find so sexy.
"Ne~ Masaki. Do you want to walk with me?" My granny asked.
"Eh? But you have already a gorgeous escort
here with you."
You maybe didn't notice but I deeply blushed at your words.
In the end we kept on walking together, you chatted with my granny and I stared at you. I couldn't take my eyes off of you because for me you were the most beautiful being I ever saw. And you are still now.
Some weeks passed by and we met more and more frequently, thanks to my granny. I had the chance to talk with you and you were always smiling to me and everyone else but in my heart I felt that something was wrong. Because every time you were alone, you always had that sad expression on your face that haunted my thoughts. I wanted to help you, to make you smile, to erase all that sadness.
It was a warm day of June when I found the courage to ask. We went together to take some juice and coffee for my granny and us because she felt tired that day. I just knew that the next day you'll be discharged from the hospital and I thought that would be my last chance.
"Masaki-chan." I started with a shaky voice. "I don't know if it's the right time or if I'm good enough but will you go out with me?" I couldn't keep my eyes on yours. I was too afraid you would reject me. Can you imagine it? A 30 years-old grown up man who feared to be rejected: I felt pathetic. But on the contrary, you just took my face in your hands and gave me a little peck on my lips. My eyes widened and I bet my face was really funny because you giggled and looked at me with loving eyes.
"Will you come to pick me up tomorrow? I feel like going on a date after all this time in the hospital."
I smiled like a stupid man in love as I actually was and I hugged you tightly, whispering in your ear: "Of course I'll come." And you chuckled happy.
The next day your room was empty when I arrived at the hospital. A nurse said that you already got out. I couldn't believe it so I went at the entrance and looked for you. I waited and waited. I kept on waiting until it was almost evening but you never showed up. I thought of all possible and impossible things that could have happened to you but neither of them was the truth. I was just trying to protect myself from being hurt but when the sun finally set down, I realized you would never show up. Although the tears that were forming in my eyes and the wish to run away, I went to greet my granny. Maybe because I needed some support, a shoulder to cry on. My granny, looking at my poor state, asked if something happened and I shook my head, saying bitterly: "I was just dumped."
"Maybe it's better like that." She whispered.
"What do you mean?"
"He's a difficult boy, you know. A nurse told me what happened to him. I think it's better that he took the right decision because you couldn't live with a burden like that."
I was confused and angry. Why was my granny talking like that about you? I couldn't understand it at all but knowing my granny, she surely did something.
"What do you know?" I asked serious.
"Masaki-chan needs to be cured. He tried to kill himself."
"Eh?" I was shocked. I never imagined that behind your sad expression there was so much pain.
"He lost his whole family in an accident. He was the only one who survived. But now he's depressed and I don't think you would be happy with him."
"Did you say something to him?" I asked already knowing the answer. My granny looked at me with worried eyes like she was afraid of my reaction.
"He... he was here yesterday night. He asked me if it was okay for him to go out with you." She paused. "I said I didn't like it."
"What?" I snapped at her.
"I just thought about you. Maybe I was too harsh. Now I regret that I said something like that but that's what I really feel." She just tried to justify herself but for me there was no meaning in what she was saying.
I silently got up and went to check at the reception if they could give me your address. It was hard but fortunately with a playful smirk and some cutesy words, the nurse agreed.
I ran as fast as my legs could go and when I finally arrived in front of your apartment, I knocked with so much strength that for a moment I thought I would break your door. After some seconds, I heard your feeble voice asking:
"Who is it?" And when I replied, you opened the door with puffy and red eyes and an unbelievable expression. You were so cute I couldn't help but hug you tightly.
"Don't dare to leave me again like that." I whispered in your ear and I felt my eyes blurry from the upcoming tears. You grabbed on my shirt and hid your face on my shoulder before you began to cry again.
"Why?" You asked in between the sobs.
"Because I think I’ve really fallen deeply for you." I immediately replied like it was the most obvious thing in the whole world. You giggled and hid your face in the crock of my neck. I felt some strange fear in your touch and your lips were trembling when you whispered:
"Do you know...?"
"Shhh..." I cut your words because I suspected what you wanted to say. "I don't care. I really just need you by my side. That's all."
It’s not true that I don't care about your past, it’s just that I don’t want to hurt you. The one thing I'm most worried about is to lose you. Because for me you're like a fragile wine glass: I can't make a toast with too much strength because it could break, but I can't either use less than what it needs because it won't make any sound.
I felt your lips curving in a smile, a true smile. And I wanted to see it so much that I grabbed your shoulders and made you face me. But you weren't smiling anymore; instead you were looking at me with such a puzzled and cute expression that I felt the need to kiss you and I did. The taste of your sweet lips, I will never have enough of it.
A year passed from that day. My granny is still alive and cheerful. The one thing that changed is that now we visit her together, our hands entangled. She apologized to you and she had to admit that you are a beautiful being, not just on the outside. She came to know the beautiful you, the one who didn’t open his whole heart to me but also the one who never fails to give the best smiles just to me.
And while I wait for you to completely trust me, to this beautiful you that I can’t live without any more, I want to say something that I will never say to anyone else: I love you.
